Unit 404 is an artist collective founded in 2020.

Technological advancements have created knowledge that is as helpful as it is confusing. An ever-growing collective archive has the potential to enhance the knowledge of the everyday individual as much as it has the power to delude it. All of us are trying to make sense of an increasingly chaotic landscape of knowledge and diverse channels of communication. This creates new perspectives, spanning from traditional nihilism to emphatic techno-optimism. Unit 404 is an art-collective that does not try to feign a false sense of unanimity on these issues. Its members, former students of the HBK in Braunschweig and now active in creative capacities all over Germany, do not believe in a prerogative of interpretation, not even within the confines of its small member count. Quite the contrary, they try to enrich discourses through artistic means. With their individual backgrounds ranging from sound- and conceptual art, over 3D- and motion design to media studies, their medium of choice varies. Their focus, however, lies in creating multimedia-installations and experiences, which are created using a variety of materials and software, as well as creating a stable ideological and philosophical foundation to base these works on.

History

- "404 is an error message, which one encounters more often on the Internet. It means that a link is missing, something is not properly connected. "Unit" is a unity, the combination is, so to speak, the "unit of the missing link", this is because we all have very different competences, but try to work together in these overlaps." Johanna Spieker, excerpt from the Artist Talk for the fall exhibition at Kunstverein Hannover, 2021
